-- Its Chopta, "Jai Baba Tungnath" / Proud Of My Mother And Wife --

My love for mountains can never end. The more I explore, More I get into it, More It unfolds new love, Even my wife is suspecting me and always question me about my love for mountains. I had been planning for this trip with my family from February and was in touch with the local guy about the opening of this place which is called as the "Mini Switzerland Of India". I daily buzz him over the phone and like a small child inquire about the opening of chopta and the activities they people do.

In the month of Feb, I almost called him 5-6 times (His name was Devendra) and we have had the same conversation every time.

Me--> Chopta Opened?
Devendra --> No Sir, It is snowing heavily, No chances as of now.
Me --> When will it open?
Devendra --> Cant Say?

In the month of March, My Thirst Increased adequately and called him again, he gave me the same answer what he used to give but at last it changed and was a different one stated below.

Me --> Chopta Opened?
Devendra --> No sir, Roads are closed with 5ft of snow all over.
Me --> When will it open?
Devendra --> Sir aapka Number Maine Save Kar Liya Hain, Mein Call Kar Dunga Jab Bhi Khulega aap chinta na karo.
Me --> Ok Brother, Thanks for your understanding.

Meanwhile, visited Kartik swami temple with my friend and quenched my thirst for some weeks. On 2nd April, I got a call from him stated "Chopta Khul Gaya Sir", I overjoyed and thanked him for all this. Also, asked him to book a place for four of us ( He has his guest-house in Baniyakund, 4 KM below chopta), Wasting no time I informed my family and we planned for the trip from 11th-14th April.

11th April --> Ghaziabad-> Meerut-> Muzzafarnagar-> Haridwar-> Rishikesh (Night Stay)
12th April --> Rishikesh->Byasi->Devprayag->Srinagar->Rudraprayag->Augustmuni->Kund->Ukhimath->Chopta
13th April --> Early Morning Trek To Tungnath
14th April --> Back to Home Via Gopeshwar->Chamoli->Karnprayag->Nandprayag->Gauchar->Rudraprayag->Rishikesh->Home

I am so proud of my mother and wife who did this trek which became so so difficult and very slippery due to bad weather with terrible snowfall hovering all around with 4ft of snow in and around the temple, the temperature at the top was -3 degree with strong cold winds blowing over making the trek an uphill task. They both with full dedication and with amazing willpower completed the trek, as told to me by my guide we have witnessed the best trek of all time which was like a Walk Through Heaven"

Day1--11Th April--
Ghaziabad-> Meerut-> Muzzafarnagar-> Haridwar-> Rishikesh (Night Stay)

It was 11th, the day we were to embark upon our journey towards the mighty Himalayas, I came early by picking up my wife from her office, called my mother to settle down all the things at one place in order to avoid last minute rush. My father was roaming in the verandah, so as to adjust to the conditions(Trekking One) which he replied on seeing me. He said "Dekh Subah Se Khub Chal Raha Hun". Being not very fit due to various health issues, he doesn't have an idea that a trek in itself that too at an enormous height is something to look upon, However, we all have instructed him that if we see a minute problem on acclimatization, we will immediately cancel his trek plan and he will have to settle down there at Baniyakund. He said "Ok Dekh Lenge".

A day before, my whole family has purchased a set of shoes, can see from their glowing faces about the excitement. I thanked god for the proper sailing of plan and left our home at 6.15 P.M. My family was so damn excited that enroute, they asked me all the details about Chopta, Tungnath, they also asked me about the road conditions after Rudraprayag, as we have to travel on the Kedarnath route, the very next day. I was not very sure about the road conditions which we were to witness, as during my earlier visit to Kartik swami temple I followed Rudraprayag-Pokhri route which was not that bad. However, I engaged them till the end by describing the beauty of that place, which was very well known to me .

Driving continuously we reached Rishikesh at around 10.30 P.M, I had already booked a hotel for us to stay which was at Laxman Jhula, We had dinner and slept early so as to start afresh tomorrow for our dream "Chopta".

Day2--12Th April--
Rishikesh->Byasi->Devprayag->Srinagar->Rudraprayag->Augustmuni->Kund->Ukhimath->Chopta

We woke up at 5.30 A.M, freshen ourselves. Last night had a word with the owner of the hotel about Chopta and Tungnath. He had been to that place last week and warned us to drive carefully, as the roads were not that good after Rudraprayag. I noted his words and started our journey onwards, we left the hotel at 7 A.M. The morning feel was awesome, all the trees at the roadside were bending in full flow as if they are welcoming us with full dedication. I imagined how life was so soothing in here at the gateway of heaven, my father was continuously saying "Gaadi Dheere Chalana

Rishikesh was looking like a lovely painting of nature from the top, we continued our drive and reached Devprayag at around 9 A.M, looking at the confluence my mother and wife immediately asked me to stop for some religious rituals. The flow was awesome, we could hear the roar which has been produced by the confluence of two rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi, Mesmerizing treat it was, I can feel the warmth and peace of that pure place. We moved further, the views were spell bounding, From the rear view mirror I can see my mother staring outside as if she has found the best treat of all time. The time which she would cherish all her life, same was the case with my wife, my father was also enjoying every bit of it but the main thing which he was concentrating on was "Gaadi Dheere Chalana

Day2: Continued

Reached Srinagar in an hour, I told my family about the famous Dhari Devi temple which was on the way, we planned for a quick roadside Darshan. The roads were well maintained with very few bad patches in between, we reached Rudraprayag at 11 A.M. This was my second visit to Rudraprayag in 15 days, so I was very much sure about the route that we need to take towards Chopta, from Rudraprayag there were three routes, One goes for Badrinath via Chamoli-Joshimath, Another one goes to Pokhri which I took during my earlier visit to Kartik Swami Temple and the last one goes to Kedarnath via Kund. We need to take this route, from Kund the road diverges into two lanes, The left one goes to Kedarnath via Guptkashi and the right one goes to Chopta via Ukkhimath, wasting no time we took the Kedarnath route.

[Road Conditions]

Let me brief you guys about the road conditions which we witnessed till Ukkhimath. During our journey we came across various landslides which kept us stranded at the road for over two hours, The roads were in a very bad condition, there were multiple paths which has mud, in place of tar, gives a feeling that the whole road had been swept away during the June-2013 disaster. It took more than 4 hours for us to cover only 70 KM of distance, there was one instance, when my father told me to move back by looking at the road conditions. However, we made our way through these tough roads and reached Baniyakund at around 3.15 P.M.

Day2--12Th April-- Continued........

We had a stay at Baniyakund, which was 4 KM below Chopta, Goshhhh I can't even express my feelings on reaching there, I haven't seen any place as beautiful as this, It was green all over with the majestic Himalayas standing tall at the background of the guest house made me feel that peace has its own place. I promised myself that whatever may be the situation, one day I will be living at such a place, which has so soothing environment. My soul, my mind everything got purified upon reaching there.

We parked our car and greeted by Devender with whom I was in touch from a very long time. The guest house was just at roadside, surrounded by lush green meadows and lovely Buransh, gives a feeling that how nature has scheduled his plight of giving everything the golden-touch.

My family was also having the same state of mind, they also can't believe that such place exist, my father was seeing quoted "Kya Jagah Hai", It was heaven.We immediately took our room and freshen ourselves, we haven't had anything from the morning, so Devender prepared a very nice food for all of us. It was very cold, after having lunch, my father decided to sit in front of the bonfire and we three of us decided to explore the place, there was a small Bugyal at the back of the guest house which was very much tempting, apart from the majestic Himalayas, we could very clearly see Chopta and Tungnath peak from there. The weather at the top was bad.

We explored the place and clicked lots of photographs, It begin to get dark, Suddenly the weather got cleared with moonlight taking its toll perfectly. The stars were looking like a diamond in the sky, the beauty of that place was mesmerizing, I can't even express how happy I was, the feelings were so pure, so divine. we were into our rooms by 8 P.M, had our dinner and hit the beds at around 10 P.M, Tomorrow will be much tough for my family as we would be doing the Trek To Tungnath.

13th April / Day:3 --> Early Morning Trek To Baba Tungnath

I woke up at 6 A.M, It was the best day of my life, today we would be experiencing a heaven walk, the Tungnath Trek.My family was getting ready in packing themselves in layers of clothing in order to sustain high altitude freezing cold. I immediately went outside and had a glimpse of the Tungnath peak. It was damn freezing, It had snowed last night quoted one of the guy who was in the kitchen. The weather was not clear, there were clouds hovering around the hills.

I asked my family to be quick, my father was feeling uneasy and having difficulty in breathing due to severe cold, we gave him his medicine and steam, minutes before he became alright and asked us that he would be accompanying us till Chopta if not at Tungnath. We agreed to that, and started from Baniyakund with our guide Rahul at 7 A.M and reached Chopta in 15 mins, wasting no time we started the trek, few local guys warned us to take care as the weather up was not friendly. We came across many people who were returning from midway due to bad weather, I noted there concern and Silence streamed up the moment I went few meters ahead .................
