Dear All,

I am srestha from Bhuj. We are planning for a trip to HP in Nov with my husband and daughter 5yrs old. We will be reaching Shimla on 11th and be at Kullu manali till 15th. Wanted guidance for best way to travel back to delhi from Manali and also some tips to travel the places there. We have our train back to Bhuj from Delhi on 16th at 11.40am. What would be the best way and hassle free journey option from Manali to delhi.

Thank you

Srestha

Hi Srestha,
The best way to commute between Delhi to Shimla (Or Delhi to Manali) is via AC Volvo busses. These are comfortable but a bit expensive than the ordinary busses. There are plenty of overnight busses from Delhi to Shimla (and Delhi to Manali)... You can either opt for private busses (Most of these busses departs from Kashmiri Gate.... These busses can be booked from any bus ticket booking website....

However I personally will recommend you to book Government busses (VOLVO) of Himachal State Transport.... Government Busses can be booked from "http://www.hrtc.gov.in" website...

You can also book tickets from Shimla to Manali from the same website... These busses are punctual and cheaper than the private ones..

let me know if you need more information...

Hi Vishnu,

First and foremost, have looked at some of your links and information. This is too good and helpful for a family who is planning a vacation. By the way, I am never a blogger or a person who would go through detailed blogs, but this one caught my eye !

I am planning a vacation to North India during Christmas (22 to 31). Started with Leh and Ladakh and then changed my mind (currently) to Manali and Shimla. Still in doubt and deciding .... Main motive is to enjoy the Winter (Snow), this is not a religious trip, not too keen in adventure sports, looking for a nice vacation where family can enjoy the scenery and also places to go around and shop !

Any help or suggestions from you would be helpful. Thanks in advance for your help.

Bye for now,
Satish

Hi Satish,
Chritsmas is not the right time to venture into Ladakh. It will be very cold and you won't certainly enjoy that winter.

If you want to enjoy snow then Manali, Shimla would be better pick. From Shimla, you can decide to go further towards Sarahan and even try Kinnaur if possible. There will be a lot of snow on this route. Shimla and Manali are the good places to buy Souvenirs.

For adventure sports, Auli (in Uttaranchal) is one of the few skiing resort of the country.

We will be able to help you once you finalize a destination.

Greetings Vishnu,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I have my tickets booked from Mumbai to Chandigarh starting 21 Dec and return on 31 Dec back to Mumbai. This means, I will have to return from Manali to Chandigarh on 30 to catch the flight from Chandigarh on 31 Dec.

Leh and Ladakh is ruled out per your suggestion. Thanks for the same.

Can you please help me plan for the above days, starting 21 noon (I guess it will take 3 hours by road from Chandigarh to Shimla, flight touches down Chandigarh around 9:30 AM).

Any help on this would be appreciated. Also, since this is a family vacation, will be of help if you can suggest Hotels as well for the places. Not a 5* freak, but not a 2* either Smile

Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Satish,
Duration is not a problem so I believe that you will be able to cover Shimla and Manali both in your vacations.

There are couple of more destinations/overnight stays I would like to include in your trip.

* Spend 1-2 day in Shimla and then spend a night in Narkanda which is ahead from Shimla on NH22. If you are interested, you can also visit Sarahan Temple (Beyond Rampur) which lies on the same road. There are few accommodation facilities available at Sarahan and all of those are basic.

* Beyond Sarahan lies Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh which will be snow covered during December. I'll not recommend traveling to Kinnaur with family during december. Still if you want, you can give it a try to reach Kalpa/Rekong peo and spend a night there.

* If you are not interested to visit Kinnaur then you can take a detour to Jibhi from Rampur. It's the main route to reach Manali from Shimla but will be very tiring to cover the whole distance in one day. From Rampur, you can either get a bus or taxi to Manali. You can stop at Jibhi (Which is 10 km after crossing Jalori pass). Jibhi is a beautiful village in Banjar Valley.

* Stay at Jibhi for one night.

* Head further towards Manali and stay there for 2-3 days. You can have a one day trip to Rohtang pass to enjoy snow.

I think it will consume all your days. As a side trip you can also enter Parvati valley from Kullu and stay overnight at Kasol which is primarily a hippie town.

All the travel blogs about Himachal can be found on the link below those you may find useful...

Hi Nitin,

There is no point visiting Shimla and Manali both with this tigh schedule. I would suggest you to skip Shimla and visit only Manali. there is a lot to see and do around Manali. No point just running around.

Hi Vishnu

I'm intending to visit Kasol, Manikaran and hoping to visit Malana to capture the essence of uniqueness of the people living there in April, couple of weeks time.  Can you guide me through with any contact details and a bit of info around accommodation and tour guide and other little hamlets to visit please? Are you able to email me the details?  Thanks.

Cheers

Kalyani
