Dear Trekkers....
If you are venturing your next adventure in Garwar range of Himalayas and seeking some place for renting trekking accessories... Here goes a very good deal for you guys....

Nehru Institute of Mountaineering at Uttarkashi rents Mountaineering accessories at a decent price.....  I hope attached pdf would be a help for fellow trekkers...specially those who are planning Tapovan and further...

Hi Vikas... You are exactly on the right forum... NIM would be the best place to hire trekking accessories... After Arriving at Uttarkashi, Please visit NIM office and explain them the trek you want to do.. they will provide you a guide, porter and other trekking accessories... you will also require special permit... It's going to be an awesome trek... Uttarkashi is the place to fix everything...

I will be extremely happy if you can provide your inputs once you are back from this trek... we would like to follow the same trail one day...

Hi Vishnu...Myself Shawon from Kolkata have a plan to visit Gomukh, Tapovan & Nandanvan(if possible)with my 4 office colleagues at mid of May 2013.I read each and every instructions which is realy very very helpful.
But to make successful our journey I wants a complete guideline from you and for have some query.

1> Porter Details (best rate,no of days reqd, from where I need to contact, any contact no)
2> From MOUNTAINEERING EQUIPMENT list which equipments are essential (if I don’t carry anything from my home)
3> Do's & Don't s.
4> prerequisite (Physical, Mental, Financial)
5> Total Budget (from Haridwar to Haridwar including everything)
6> Complete Route Details.
7> Essential docoments for Permission (how many days before need to contact from the date of journey)

Thanks in advance for your help and everything. please include if I miss anything.

Hi Shawon,
I will suggest you to fix everything at Uttarkashi before heading further for your trek... Uttarkashi has got couple of trek organizers along with NIM (Nehru Institute of Mountaineering)... You will also have to reach forest department for getting permissions for this trek... Here goes my inputs on your queries...

1) Contact NIM for getting the quotation on Porter rate.... 500-600 INR per day is common rate....You can also explore the possibility of going with a pony... a pony can carry more luggage then a porter and relatively cheaper.... However Pony can also walk on a well outlined trail and can not cross over the snow fields... Contact number is included in NIM pdf....

2) It will be advisable to carry your own sleeping bags, shoes...

3) It is tricky to answer..... High altitude trekking is a test of your patience and determination... You guys may fall sick or may falter.... Always take an informative decision and consult with your guide before starting your next day.... Do it with your own pace... No need to do anything taxing which your body does not allow.... Endurance level matters a lot along with mental strength....

4) Again its an open bounded question... Mental strength matters the most in my opinion.... Treks are generally expensive so get prepared for the same... More number of days means more money....

5) Budget is difficult to predict... You can cut it down by taking public transport from Haridwar to Uttarkashi and Gangotri...

6) Gangotri-Bhojwasa-Gaumukh-Tapovan-Nandvan.... You can get much detailed map at Forest department, Uttarkashi....

7) Voter ID or Passport will be the best documents to carry... Also carry photographs and copies of these documents.... Permissions are generally easily procured.... You can get it on the same day... I will suggest you to give a call to forest department before starting your trip.... Their number is 01374223693

Dear Vishu,
Thanks for a very informative blog.Me and my brother are planning to go to Gomukh on 14th May.Some querries on that.
1.Can't I get the permission form Gangotri or should i go to Uttarkashi for that.
2.Do I need trekking gear?
3.Do I need a guide?Where can I find the route map to Gomukh from Gangotri?
4.How long does it take to go to Tapovan from Gomukh?
5.Where do I find a guide?

Thanks

Hi Sudip,

1) Permits can be procured from Gangtori as well but those are only exception... Better to get it from Uttarkashi... You can also call Forest Department, Uttarkashi to get more info on it...

2) You won't require trekking gear for Gaumukh...

3) If you are going till Gaumukh then there is no need to hire a guide.. trail is very well outlined...

4) Tapovan is all together is different trek... I guess permissions are also different.... Although Tapovan is just 3-4 km hike from Gaumukh but you will need a guide for that leg...

5) You can get a guide in Gangotri... you basically will need someone who knows the route...

It should be available at NIM.... There are some other private trek organizers in Uttarkashi... Portable Oxygen cylinder should be available at Uttarkashi....it's the base of so many high altitude treks....suprised to know that NIM does not have it...

Have you tried calling them ?

Hi Vishnu.

You say that Tapovan is a completely different trek to than gangotri. So for Gangotri, i need no special equipment, and no guide. But for tapovan i need both of these? And how many extra days do i need for these 4km? Just one day for the return journey to gangotri?

Best

I assume you meant Gaumukh instead of Gangotri in your reply.... Gangotri is not a trek..It's the base for Gaumukh, Tapovan and all other treks...

Reaching Gaumukh is easier than Tapovan because trail is well outlined and its not that high altitude trek... Tapovan looks just 4 km from Gaumukh but indeed quite challenging....

Generally its recommended to do overnight stay at Tapovan....your typical itinerary can be...

Gangotri- Bhojwasa (Overnight stay) - Gaumukh - Tapovan (Overnight stay) - Bhojwasa (Overnight stay) - Gangotri..

I hope its clarifying everything...

If you are planning to stay overnight at Tapovan then you will need tent, stove, grocery etc... Crampon will also be required if there is snow....

Hi Vishnu,

Me and my friend are planning to trekk till Tapovan in last week of Oct'15. As you suggested, I am planning to take mountainering equipments on rent from Uttarkashi, perhaps from NIM. I will obtain permit from Uttarkashi too. My doubts are:

1. Will it be fine to let forest officer know before applying for permit that our destination is Tapovan, and not Gomukh? Will it not reduce the chance of getting permit?

2. If I hire porter & guide from Gangotri, will they be able to get additional permit and camping gears for themselves from Gangotri?

3. If answer to doubt 2 is yes, then why not take everything from Gangotri?

Thanks for all the information you already shared on this page.

Hi Vivek,

1) Yes, you should tell DFO about your plan. there is a different permit for Tapovan.

2) After getting permit from Uttarkashi, you can hire portar and other trekking equipments from Gangotri as well.

3) Yes. you can hire stuff from Gangotri but options are limited. there are 1-2 agencies.

You would not need any trekking accessories for Kasol and Tosh. Tosh is even reachable by road.

Dayara bugyal is best treks for beginners. its not very steep and not technical at all. However for winters, you will need better camps and sleeping bags. It will be very cold so you need to prepare yourself for snow and cold.

- For trekking accessories, you can either check with some agency at Haridwar, Rishikesh or at Barsu. Chances are bright at Haridwar.

You can travel to Kasol, Malana, Tosh, Kheerganga, Naggar, Manali. There are plenty of sightseeing in Manali and around. 4 days are good enough to travel all the places i mentioned above.

Hi Baldev,

Chances of snow are low at Kasol but you can see snow near Kheerganga or at SarPass if you willing to take that trek. Permissions are not requirement for most of the part in Parvati. For Sar Pass you would need permissions.

Camping is possible near river side but most of the sites are occupied. Permission from the land owner is needed if you want to go by law.

Hello Vishu,

I have read all the comments on your blog so far and your answers have really solved almost all my queries. You are doing a great job.

I am planning a trek of Gangotri-Gomukh-Bhojvasa-Tapovan-Nandanvan-Tapovan-Mt. Shivling base-Gangotri. I have all the required equipments for the trek excluding tent and stove. I am planning to hire it from NIM. I have booked the tickets on 12/5 from Ahmedabad, Gujarat.  I have still yet to contact the forest department and NIM people for permission. I have done several national camps in Scout and Youth Hostels. But this is my first Solo Trip.

I would really appreciate few advices and tips that will help me make the trip memorable.

Thank you.

Hi Krunal,

I am not sure what sort of trekking experience you had but going solo on this trail is not very common i see. beyond Gaumukh, trail is not outlined. How are you going to locate the sites you outlined. I will personally recommend a guide who knows the terrain well. Chances of getting lost in the wild are really high if you are not aware of the route.

rest everything is not a challenge as you are an experienced trekker. I do not know anything which lies above Gaumukh.

Hi,

I am Bhagirath from Hyderabad, We (Group of 2) are planning on trek to Kedarkantha summit. So we are interested in renting few basic trekking gears from you.

Trek is originally planned from 25th December to 28th December. Would you be able to provide us the gear listed below for 2 persons? 1. Gaiters. 2. Tent for 2. 3. Cap Balaclava. 4. Woolen Gloves. 5. Crampons  6. Googles snow. 7. Hiking poles. One random question. Do we require any permission from forest department for trekking kedarkantha? Regards, Bhagirath Manthena.

My friends and I plan Dayara bugyal trek in March mid.  I have few doubts.  Woukd really appreciate if you could provide your guidance.  Our itinerary is somewhat like this

Day 1..reach Uttarkashi by 12pm

Day 2..uttarkashi to raithal to goi

Day 3.. Goi to dayara bugyal

Day 4... Dayara to barsu

Day 5.. Barsu to uttarkashi by 12pm max

Our trek will be of 3 days.  But we have absolutely no camping equip.  I saw your pdf attached above of NIM but i need to know if it is possible to reach uttarkashi by 12pm and then arrange fir these equipment from NIM afyer 12pm for the very next day or does it take prior a lot of taime to acquire the materials.

Also do you have an idea as to what the porter; guide charges are during month of march and are they arranged too at NIM.  We have allotted a budget of 1500 per person for the trekking days only.. Inclusive of guide porter tent sleeping bag and mattress gaiters. We are 6 ppl. Would that be enough?

Finally does this region receive snowfall during march.

Thanks in advance
