Majuli Island: Assam

Considered as the largest inhabited riverine Island in the world, Majuli is primarily visited to experience the Neo-Vaishnavite culture of Assam at ancient Satras and to meet Mising tribe. Majuli literally means land in the middle of two parallel rivers. Being reduced to just 22 now, once there was nearly 65 satras on the Island. During winters, Majuli is also habitat of nearly 100 migratory bird species. Sadly Island is suffering severe erosion caused due to floods every year.
