Thanks Vishnu for incorporating this segment of Uttaranchal  in your website for enabling tourists share their experiences with us, for forming their itineraries and getting them vetted by the knowledgeable and for sharing their travel-plans so that others can tie-up and  make the traveling inexpensive for all. Thanks once again.

Now, may I start with my proposals.

I have a definite-plan for  Munsiyari,Chaukori and Didihat in the month of October 2012, a trip that I shall be doing solo and am currently looking out for like-minded travel-partners interested in doing this trip jointly with me. As I have drafted everything as though its a solo-trip, I am heavily dependent on public transport i.e., buses and shared SUV's.In case I get two others or less for company, it' still remains  a public-transport trip. In case I am able to form a small group of 4 people, we should be able to decide on a small  hatchback from Haldwani (Alto or Wagon-R). In case I get a bigger group of 6 people, a bigger vehicle (Innova) from Haldwani may be arranged. Else, I'm solo. Here runs the itinerary.

1. Day 1 i.e 13 October 2012: Reaching Haldwani, wherefrom proceeding to Munsiyari. The first day's travel will be the longest.......around 300 kms (11-12 hr journey). I'm told there is direct transport from Haldwani to Munsiyari, but  not  aware of  timings. Alternately, there are shared service-jeeps or quasi-public transport (SUV's like Tata Sumo, Mahendra Commanders etc.) which take us upto Almora (readily available) wherefrom  more options  to Munsiyari are available. Overnight stay at Munsiyari.

3. Day 2 i.e.14 October 2012: Munsiyari and surroundings. Small-treks in the vicinity like Khalia top and other  places.Overnight stay at Munsiyari

4. Day 3 i.e.15 October 2012: Munsiyari and surroundings. Overnight stay at Munsiyari.(Kept this day in-reserve for Munsiyari, but depends).

5. Day 4 i.e.16 October 2012: Early morning check-out from Munsiyari for next destination Chaukori. 3-odd hours travel-time. Overnight halt at Chaukori.

6. Day 5 i.e. 17 October 2012: Chaukori and surroundings.Overnight halt at Chaukori.

7. Day 6 i.e. 18 October 2012: Early morning check-out from Chaukori  for next destination Didihat. 3-odd hours travel-time. Overnight halt at Didihat.

8. Day 7 i.e. 19 October 2012:  Early morning  start  from Didihat with destination Haldwani.7-8 odd hours travel-time. May be we halt at Almora or Nainital for a few  hours sight-seeing, before proceeding to Haldwani, wherefrom I depart for Delhi. Others may continue with their programme either from Didihat or elsewhere from Nainital, Mukhteshwar,Almora,Chaukori etc.

9. Day 8 i.e. 20 October 2012: Reaching Delhi.

Travellers wishing to join me on this trip can send me a private e-mail at letsfirstchat@yahoo.com. I am  looking for committed and long-term travel-partners in Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and  Jammu & Kashmir.

PS: In case you choose to be my travel-partners, please send me a private-mail at my aforesaid e-mail address letsfirstchat@yahoo.com without which  I may not get to track your post.

Thank you.

Hello Nag,

I haven't been to didihat so cant comment anything on that place.

My suggested iternerary would be as follows: Mind you i give utmost importance to staying bit longer at a place as opposed to simply going, touching and then moving on to another place.

20th- reach munsyari. ( you are right.. longest stretch )

21st. visit khalia top .. few hours trek.

22nd . nanda devi temple ( must visit site ) and few other places in and around munsyari .

23rd. reach Chaukori by lunch time.  watch sunset from there..

24th . watch glorious sunrise from chaukori.. relax until after noon...  leave for kausani...

25th. sunrise at kausani..  in afternoon, visit wonderful pandava temple on the bank of river gomti in garur. very serene location... ...  come back to kausani by evening to witness stunning sunset. garur is 10-12 kms from kausani.

26th another sunset session..relax.... leave by 12:00... you should reach haldwani by 6pm easily.

Best means of transport, as per my opinion, is a shared taxi. pay extra, if necessary, to get seat on the front road. Taxis are fastest and by far safest, on a relative basis, means of transport on hills.

I will post few munsyari photos shortly.....

I recently completed my yet another Kumaon trip covering Chaukori and Munsiyari, among others. Chaukori is a tiny  hamlet in the Kumaon Himalayas, from where there are some awesome Himalayan views of the Western Himalayan ranges. Chaukori is blessed with some of the most scintillating views and  majestic walks, the awesome weather and the serene and picturesque settings, with pines and pleasant walks all around. I also flirted with Munsiyari, an even better hideout set in the lap of the Himalayan ranges at a much higher altitude than Chaukori. Munsiyari is known for the unhindered view of the Western Himalayan mountain ranges, especially the Panchachuli peaks which can be seen straight across and at almost touching-distance. On my way, I landed myself across the Nepal border and covered other places like Dhaulchhina, Kadrichhina, Berinag, Udayari Bend, Thal, Madkot, Jauljibi, Dharchula, Pithoragarh etc., all of which offer some scintillating views if u r lucky enough. Here is a cross-section of the photographs that I managed to click while on tour, for viewers to enjoy and keep enjoying. The link follows:

On the way back from Munsiyari, you can prefer staying at Ranikhet for a night for Gwaldham. alternatively there are many picturesque little towns on the way where you can find homestays etc.

Hi All,

I have planed for trip to this part of kumaon in early March-2016. I will be travelling with my family which includes a 5years kid. Below is my travel plan.

Day-1 : Reach Nainital.

Day 2 & 3 : In and around Nainital

Day 4: Leave for Chaukori via Ranikhet. Night stay at Chaukori.

Day 5 : In & around Chaukori. Night stay at Chaukori.

Day 6: Leave for Munsiyari at afternoon. Reach Munsiyari by evening. Night stay.

Day 7: In & around Munsiyari. Night stay.

For next 2 days I have 2 plans as below.

Option-1:

Day 8: Leave  for Binsar. Night stay in Binsar.

Day 9: Leave Binsar at afternoon. Visit Jageshwar temple complex. Finally leave for Haldwani to catch train at 6:30 pm.

Option-2:

Day 8: Relax in Munsiyari. I am considering this because of hearing so much about Munsiyari's beauty. Night stay in Munsiyari.

Day 9: Leave early morning for Binsar/Jageshwar and finally to Haldwani to catch train (at 6:30 pm). I don't think I will be able to cover Binsar after all it's a long journey. In that case can visit Jageshwar only.

I would like to know your opnion. Is it worth to stay in Munsiyari on Day 8 or should I leave on that day for Binsar?

If I would stay on Day 8, is it advisable to travel such long journey in one stretch on Day 9 (with family including 5 years old kid)?

Dear Vishnu,

Thanks for your valuable comments. One of my friends suggested that the itinerary is too congested and i may be missing few places and secondly it will hectic and more of travel. Hence it was suggested to drop mussorie.

I would appreciate, if you can share your comments in this perspective.

Thanks a lot,

Dropping mussoorie is a good idea. no point going to this direction. the itinerary you suggested was only possible using private transport. with public transport, it would become very tiring and hectic.

Reach Kathgodam by trian or your own conveyance. Kausani could be reached there in 4-5 hours.. then head over to Munsyari from there. Another 5-6 hours via bageshwar, udyari band, Thal and munsyari...

I completed my trip last week. Visited Nainital on Day 1 , Mukteshwar on Day 2. Then took a shared taxi to Almora, another shared taxi to kausani. Stayed at Kausani. Day 3 at Kausani. Not much too see. Even the sunrise and sunset was not as expected due to the weather. On Day 4 I started to Munsiyari. I started by 11 a.m so there was no direct taxi/bus. I went to bageshwar in bus, then shared taxi to chaukori, another taxi to Thal. Spent the night at Thal. Then I proceeded to Munsiyari on Day 5. It was a 3 hour journey in shared taxi. The route was beautiful. Reached at 11 a.m. Took rest and went to Nada Devi temple. Tried trekking to khuliya top.The view of panchachuli from khuliya top was awesome. Munsiyari made my trip a memorable one. On Day 7 took a shared taxi from Munsiyari to Haldwani, almost 11Hr travel including breakfast and lunch time.

Chances to see snow in March are really high. I do not have contact number of any private taxi operation in Kathgodam but its easy to find. I would suggest to go till Munsiyari if snow is the main reason of the trip.

September-October is indeed the best season to travel to kumaon side of Uttaranchal. I would suggest to visit Kausani, Munsiyari, Gwaldham. As per public transport, you will generally find shared sumos. There are also buses but not very frequent. Nainital, Ranikhet are also good places to visit.
