Hi Vishnu, thanks for creating this thread.

Hello everyone, I am planning a self organized trip to Andaman and Nicobar this December. Looking for a week's itinerary. Interested mainly in pristine beaches and water sports. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Nikhil,
Here is an itinerary i could figure out for 5-6 days in Andaman Islands..

Day1 (Port Blair):  Day tour to Ross Island, Viper Island and North Bay- It is one of the most preferred tours around Port Blair. Every morning Boat departs at 9:00 PM from the jetty behind the aquarium and returns back in the evening. Tour charges are 500 INR (including lunch) and 390 INR (without lunch). This Tour also gives sufficient time for snorkeling around North Bay. I think it’s a good deal and offers fair idea about the archipelago.

In the evening you can visit Cellular Jail and attend light and sound show(highly recommended)

Day2 (Port Blair): Wandoor beach and Mahatama Gandhi Marine National Park.

Day3 (Port Blair to Neil Island)- Spend a day there.

Day4 (Neil to Havelock Island)- Visit Beaches and cycle around the island.

Day5- Havelock Island- Snorkeling and other water sports activities..

Thanks a lot Vishnu.

I have few questions.

1) I saw your pics of Ross and Smith Islands. Are the beaches Neil similar to them? Cuz I found Ross and Smith beaches like clean beaches like in Maldives.

2) I am taking the risk of not going with an agent. So how early should I book or do u hav any suggestions to go about the same. (If u can give any local contacts, that would be really great)

3) And I wanted to try a Cruise for one journey. Is it a good option?

Hi Nikhil,

1) Ross and Smith Islands got one of the best beaches of Andaman Islands... I have not included those in the list because your trip duration is 4-5 days...These islands are near Diglipur which is 12 hours journey from Port Blair... Alternatively you can try to visit Cinque Islands those lie in the south of Andaman Islands... I heard beautiful things about these twin islands.. These can be visited from Chiriya Tapu or Wandoor beach...

2) Why do you need an agent ?... You can do the flight bookings on your own and do the hotels bookings also.... Ferry tickets can be arranged from Jetty counter (I admit its a bit tedious job but manageable).... Rest everything is pretty much do-able on your own....

3) Cruise from where to where ?... Do you mean Chennai to Port Blair or from Kolkata or Vizag for that matter...
This is around 40 hours journey and becomes tedious after a while... Food is also not good on those ships... I won't recommend it until you have sufficient time and want to save some money....

I had thought of a cruise from Chennai. I will look more on Cinque islands. People say December is the peak time and bookings might be difficult.

Cruise from Chennai to Port Blair won't be a luxury option... only recommended to those seeking adventure and long time backpackers... December is peak season for sure...

Hellooo Vishnu,

We are planning to visit Andaman early November. We are staying there for 5 days excluding arrival and departure. We have kept 2 days for Port Blair and surroundings, 2 days for Havelock and 1 day for Neil Island. Do you suggest any changes?

Also, I came across a Pic of a Sandbar connecting two islands. Some blogs show tat it is in Cinque island and some say it is near Ross Island. Can you confirm which is true.

Also, how abt Govt Accommodation. I heard that they come at a reasonable price and good facilities.

Hi Chandan,
For the trip of 5 days, its the best itinerary.. There is no need to club more destinations... 2 days in Port Blair, 2 days in Havelock and 1 day in Neil Island is the best way to spend 5 days...I don't think any change is needed...

Coming to sandbar connection twin islands then there are 2 such sites in Andaman Islands..Cinque Islands are in southern Andaman and can be approached from Wandoor beach or Marine National Park....

Ross and Smith Islands are in North Andaman and can be approached from Diglipur which is one day journey from Port Blair...

Where exactly you are seeking Government accommodation.... Neil and Havelock has got all sort of accommodation options... let me know your bugdet, I may be able to help...

Thank you very much Vishnu... Smile

I am seeking Govt accommodation in all the three places. If private ones provide similar accommodation at cheaper price, then we are OK with it. Coming to budget, since we are all guys, we will be able to adjust in any kind of accommodation. So the cheaper the better, the more the cheaper the better. On the maximum side, it even doesn't matter if we get a good accommodation for around 500-1000 per person.

And where can I find Scuba Diving at reasonable rate. Whats the cheapest and whats the average cost if we need to experience it better?

And can I include Cinque Island in the two days that I have reserved for Port Blair?

In 500-1000 INR per person, you  guys can easily get something above mid range... I think you can easily get a decent room in 500 INR for 2 person (per night) in all of these locations... I never tried Government Guest houses but Private ones are also not very costly.. Havelock is full of budget accommodation options on the beach side and same is true for Neil...

Budget accommodation options in port blair are near Aberdeen market

Havelock is the best place for indulging into water sports such as Scuba diving, Snorkeling and all... There are handful of agencies in Havelock so you can weigh different options before booking one... Here are the quotations from a pamphlet i have... Rates should be around the same.. That guy was offering some discount on these rates...

Scuva Diving (One Dive, Non Swimmer)-- 4000 INR
Additional dive --- 1500

I have one more pamphlet from another agency..will post those rates as well....

Cinque Islands can be covered from Port Blair but it will whole day activity... It's 2 hour boat ride from Chiriya Tapu and some 3 and half hour ride from Wandoor... For this trip, You will have to obtain permit for Mahatama Gandhi Marine National Park.... Alternatively you can also get in touch with any travel agency at Port Blair those arrange this trip (travel agent will take care of permit part)...

Hey Vishnu,

Sorry to bother you again.

Do you suggest going to Limestone Caves? Can I include that in 2 day stay in port Blair? Already Cinque island in one of the day is finalized. How abt this? Is it worth traveling such far?

Hey Hi.... Out of 2 days, 1 will be entirely consumed in the trip to Cinque Islands.. Limestone caves are also pretty far and traffic is regulated there so it will again consume your whole day.... you will have to hire a private vehicle for this trip though there are buses to Rangat and other towns of North Andaman.... I won't suggest you to add it  in your itinerary...not worth driving too far... I generally recommend it as a pit stop for those traveling to Diglipur....

Sighting Jarawa tribe is the only attraction on this side...

No from my side considering number of days in hand....

One more thing.

Which of these is better:

1. PB>>Havelock>>NEIL>>PB
or
2. PB>>NEIL>>Havelock>PB

Hey there.. Hope you had a good day...

I need a bit more clarification..

1. Will I get ferry tickets from Havelock to Neil? I heard from a travel agent that we have to come back to PB to reach NEIL.

2. Is there accommodation facilities at Cinque Island? Can I skip Neil stay to have a overnight stay at Cinque?

3. How much would chartering a private boat from PB to Cinque will cost?

4. Is Scuba Diving better in Cinque than Havelock?

Hi,

* You will definitely get a direct ferry from Havelock to Neil.. There are at least 2 ferries in a day... All you need to book these a day in advance...

* I don't think overnight stay at Clinque is allowed... You can stay in Wandoor... Overnight stay in Mahatma Gandhi national park is not permissible...

* Chartering a private boat will be very very very expensive... The best way to do this tour is via a tour agent at Havelock or via forest department of Wandoor (Contact Marine national park office near wandoor, they arrange day tours to Clique Island)..

* Till now, Havelock has got the best scuva diving locations in Andaman Islands..

Hi,
I think when visiting a place like andamans one should always put more than 3 islands on their list
if visiting for 3-4 days. you never know what happens to weather and if you are not prepared your itenary might just get ruined.
Take a flight to andaman's avoid cruise to reach there
visit Ross island, Viper island.
jolly buoy and red skin islands are awesome for day trips

Do visit the Cellular jail(aka KALAPANI) . there is a light and sound show they do there if you wish you can see that too it definitely is informative.

Thanks for the comment prateek....its really helpful for fellow travelers to Andaman... I think one needs at least 8-10 days for covering 3 Islands (Neil, Havelock and one more)...

Keep dropping by and help travelers community...

2.from where I can hire a snorkelling kit in portblair??how much it costs??
3.Is it better to book ticket of ross-north bay-viper and jolybuoy/redskin tour in advance by a agent???I have read there is very much rush in peak season.

Hi Supantha,
You are always welcome.. will try to help as much as i can with my limited travel experience...

1) YES, there is a direct ferry from Rangat to Havelock... It's daily ferry and takes 2 hours 30 minutes....

2) Snokerling kits are available at many places.... Best to visit from the market..... I don't know how much it should cost but its readily available...

3) No... There is no need to book the tickets in advance... you can direct purchase it from the counter... I think you can book it one day in advance.....It won't be much difference if you will book it through agents...

Namaste Vishnu Kumar ji,

First, let me congratulate you for your awesome work on this blog, I have just discovered it and let me tell you, so far so awesome! Smile

My girlfriend and I are heading off from Kolkata to Andaman Island by boat! Well, in fact, we are trying to go by boat. I've been trying to book the tickets throughout the Shipping Corporation of India and it's has been a really hard work. I've been told that the Shipping Corporation of India will just sell the tickets three days before the ship departure and that we cannot book the tickets before, do you know if this information its correct? I'm not in India right now, and I would like to guarantee our sits, do you know if there is a way to do it?

And, I've just read that you stayed in Beach number five at the Havelock Island, can you please tell the name of the place that you stayed in and how much did it cost? (we are looking for a cheap accomodation).

Thank you very much for your help.

Warm Regards,

Luís and Maria

Hi Luis/Maria.... Welcome to thinking particle...

Well, Kolkata to Port Blair would be a tricky affair... Frequency of ships is not as good as it is between Port Blair and Chennai (I guess its once in 15 days).... I also realized that advance booking very difficult... Even advance booking for ferries between Islands is also not possible....

SCI (Shipping Corporation of India) must be providing authenticate information... Did you tried calling these numbers or some other numbers ?

Shipping Corporation of India Ltd.
Shipping House, No. 13, Strand Road, Kolkata – 700 001
Tel(033) 2482354, 2488013 Fax: (033) 2482035, 2480377

Timing, schedule and fare is quite erratic i know that's why only intrepid travelers go to Andaman by Sea...

It was gold India dive resort..... There are plenty on the same lane fronting sea... I got a cheap hut in 300 INR per night...it was for solo travelers i guess... you can get a room for 2 in 500 i guess....

let me know if you need more information for planning your trip to Andaman Islands..

Cheers

Dear Vishnu,

I am planning my trip in December as per the dates below, and my accommodation is booked according to below schedule (4 Nights in Port Blair and 1 Night in Havelock).

30-Dec-2013: Reaching Port Blair at 02:10 PM. Corbyn's Cove beach, Light & Sound Show at Cellular Jail
31-Dec-2013: Port Blair to Havelock by Govt. Ferry, Elephant Beach
01-Jan-2014: Radhanagar Beach (Beach No. 7), Havelock to Port Blair by Govt. Ferry
02-Jan-2014: Ross Island, North Bay (Coral Island) and Harbour Cruise (Viper Island).
03-Jan-2014: Baratang Island, Mangrove Creeks & Lime Stone Caves, Mud Volcano, Parrot Island
04-Jan-2014: Mount Harriet, Cellular Jail (National Memorial), Chatham saw mill (the oldest and biggest mill in Asia), Forest Museum, Samundrika (Naval Marine Museum), Science Centre, Anthropological Museum, Sagarika. Return Flight Departs at 02:45 PM.

Can you please help me finalising this as per the time requirement. I also wanted to know from you about buying tickets of Govt. Ferry to and from Havelock, will it be possible that I will get the tickets of Govt. Ferry for 31-Dec, after reaching Port Blair on 30-Dec.

And also please tell me how can I reach at places mentioned above, other than Havelock, and the sequence in which I should move to different destinations.

Thanks & Regards

Hi Nitin,
It is a standard tour for Andaman Islands and very much doable... You can spend more time in Havelock if you have time...

Year end is going to be very crowded i guess so purchasing tickets would be tricky but there is no alternative to it... you will have to spend some time in the queue to get the tickets.. I think it will be difficult to get the ticket of 31st December as you already reaching in the afternoon of 30th....

You can check at the ferry counter once you arrive there but chances are very very bleak....

For 2nd January tour, you can take regular boat which departs in the morning and cover all three places..

For 3rd, you will have to hire a private vehicle otherwise won't be possible to visit all the sites by public transport..

You have added many destination for 4th as well and that too just for first half so you will have to hire a private taxi.....

Getting the ferry ticket to Havelock would be tricky... Ticket counter opens early in the morning and sometimes tickets get sold out very fast....

I will suggest you try the ticket for 1st January on 31st Morning and spend 31st evening in Port Blair itself... Do the 4th January sightseeing that day....

let me know if you have any follow up query... I will be happy to help you outlining an itinerary...

Cheers

Hi Vishnu,

I am planning for my Honeymoon trip for Andaman for a week.

After googling a lot i decided that i will plan my own honeymoon trip as the travel agents cost us really more.

Dates I am planning are from 27th June 2014 to 3rd July 2014.

Can you please help me out in planning what all places i should cover the most.

I am great water sports lover too so i heard abt the Havlock has the best water sports and all so how many days do we need to spend there too.

As I am going to my honeymoon please give me the best plan where i can cover the best places in Andaman and make this trip memorable for us.

Thanks a lot in advance.

June and July is not the best time to visit Andaman Islands.. it will be raining heavily and beach life will be pretty much deserted..  Getting ferries between Islands may also become a problem so i will suggest you to reconsider your plan..

Coming on itinerary... You should spend 3 nights at Havelock.. Havelock is a lovely and lively island... Neil Island is also good and you can spend 2 nights there...

Port Blair and trips around can consume 2 nights...  An evening at Wandoor beach is something you can add.. its away from usual tourist trail..

Hi Arpan....  February is one of the best months to visit Andaman Islands i believe... 8 days are good enought but as you said you want to spend this time leisurely, i would not recommend you to make a trip to North Andaman..

After arriving at Port Blair, spend 2-3 nights there...

Day 1: Day tour to Ross Island, Viper Island and North Bay- It is one of the most preferred tours around Port Blair.

Day 2: Visit Mount Harriet, Cellular jail and Wandoor beach in the evening.

Day 3: you can have a day tour to Cinque Islands which are in the south of Port Blair

Day 4/5: Neil Island

Day 6/7/8: Havelock Island...

Hoping it will be helpful..

40k for 4 nights and 5 days is quite a good budget for 2 people...

Havelock, Neil and Port Blair are full of accommodation options of all the ranges.... Ferry prices are standard for all the journeys (Porl Blair to Havelock, Havelock to Neil, Neil to Port Blair)...

let me know if you want to anything else in particular..

Hello Vishnu,

Thanks for some great advice posted here. We're looking at planning our honemoon to Andaman on 9th December. We have 5-6 days in hand.

My main concern is regarding the ferry timings and tickets. Any way we can book them online or in advance? Or do hotels have the option of selling them too?

Thanks,

Hi Shruti,

I think hotel guys can arrange ferry tickets but there is no way to book these ferries in advance.

Ferry ticket is a tiring process specially when you are traveling in season.

Hi Vishnu : I'm arriving into Port Blair with my family, on January 11th morning @ 10:30 a.m. and need to reach Neil island the same day- I have night accomodation fixed in Neil for 11th night. Please let me know all the ferry timings to Neil. I heard of one ferry leaving PB @ 11:30 a.m., but that may be difficult to catch, since my flight reaches PB @ 10:30 only. I've also heard that ferry tickets are difficult to get during that peak travel period, so I'll ask my hotel in PB (staying for 2 nights in PB on the way back) to help me here - or any other suggestions on getting ferry tickets to Neil island ? Any other ways to reach Neil island from PB - that leaves PB in the afternoon ? Will it take about 1 hour to reach the jetty from PB airport ? Thank you for your time !!

Hi.

I think it will be very difficult to board the ferry to Neil island on 11th only. Yes, there are 2 ferries. Here is more information about Neil Island.

http://thinkingparticle.com/blog/neil-island-map-hotels-andaman-havelock

Yes, it is very difficult to get the ferry ticket during tourist season. Ferries are the only way to reach Neil Island, there is no other alternative.

If your hotel is able to get the tickets for 11:30 AM ferry and you are able to get out of airport at 10:45 then there are little chances to board the ferry.

you can try you luck.

Hi Nikhil,

Are you staying for all the days in Havelock Island ?, I would suggest to stay 2-3 nights in Neil Island as well.

For remaining 2 days in Port Blair, you can take the standard day tour to Ross Island etc and for One day, you can go to Wandoor beach and do Port Blair city sight seeing.

let me know if you have any other query.

Hi Nikhil,

Neil Islands are really serene. Beaches are good so its advisable to spend 2 nights in Neil Islands. Yes, there are 2 ferries between Havelock and Neil Island every day. For wild-life, North Andaman is the best but you can visit Mount Harriet which is close to Port Blair.

Hi ,

Me and my husband are planning to visit andamans between may4th to may 9th and i m really confused on the places to be visited and do i need to go by travel agent ? etc..

Things which i dont want to miss are important islands(not exactly sure which are the ones that is should not miss),important places in port blair, scuba diving.

I felt i should plan 3 days at port blair and 2 days at havelock, but i m really not sure how do i plan my itinery and arrange the accomoation in advance and also the flight tickets.

Can you please help me plan how i can go about this.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Divya,

There is no need to go through a travel agent. Andaman can be arranged on your own. you do not have much time to travel all the islands. I would suggest to go by the plan you decided. 3 days in port Blair and 2 in Havelock. If you can then you can do 2 days port Blair and one day at Neil Island.

May is not the peak so you do not need to book the hotels in advance. it will be monsoon time in Andaman islands.

Flights you will have to book as per your convenience.

Hi Vishnu,

Three of us would be visiting Andaman in the second week of April.

I wanted to know what should be our itinerary for around 6 days. Port Blair, Havelock, Neil Island. Would you suggest anything else?

Also, what are the must visit places in Andaman?

Regarding the budget, we would be looking at something around 15000 per person excluding the flight. Is it manageable?

We have a lady in our group so please let me know if we could get some good budget hotels which are also safe and hassle-free.

Are prior bookings required for hotels and ferry or we can reach Andaman and book them?

Thanks,

Abhishek.
