Hello

We are planning to go to Wayanad (3 days) mid of October next week from Bangalore

Before proceeding further planning please let me know/guide me on
1)  Can we plan to drive down from Bangalore till resort/hotel ? any timings which I need to follow? since I understand I need to pass through Forest area!
2)   Should we need to take KSRTC (Karnataka State transport) instead ?
3) I've not booked any resort or place to Stay - can I get a decent resort (eco-friendly) to stay without advance booking?
4) Since I'm going with my family - do you have any suggestions on resorts/ accommodation and any near by (waterfalls) places to visit which I can cover in 2 days of my stay...

Please lets know your feedback.

Thanks in advance for your time and help.

Regards,
RR- Bangalore

Hi...
First of all I will recommend you to go through following write ups about Wayanad... Those are really comprehensive articles... These articles will help you outlining the initial draft of your itinerary....

http://www.thinkingparticle.com/articles/brief-guidebook-wayanad

http://www.thinkingparticle.com/articles/wayanads-destinations-guide

http://www.thinkingparticle.com/blog/keralan-odyssey-valediction-wayanad

Now here are my inputs on your queries...

1) Yaa, it would not be a problem to drive till your accommodation. From Mysore, there are 2 different directions to reach Wayanad but i would recommend you to come via Route 1: Mysore-Nanjangudu-Gundlupet (NH-212, Ooty road)-Muthanga- Sulthan Bathery becuase other routes are not in good shape. This route gets closed in the evening so you should pass it before sunset...

2) KSRTC is not the bad choice.. In fact its my favorite public transport bus service....

3) Wayanad is full of accommodations... You will find plenty of homestays, resorts on the way... I don't think there is any need to book your hotel in advance...You can easily get one after reaching Wayanad..

4) With Family, Sultanbattery/Kalpetta is the better pick... There are some waterfalls close to Kalpetta those you can visit with your family....

let me know if you have further queries...

Regards
Vishnu Kumar

Hi Vishnu;

Thanks for your update and suggestion.

I shall update you in case of any further queries. Well my only concern now is about the "Kaveri issue"  which is popping up right now... I'll assess the situation and shall plan accordingly.

Hello,

              I opt driving......
After Gundalpet u enter the reserved forests of Bandipur and Madumalai... The check posts to these forests will open after  6 am and get closed after sunset....So, plan it in such that u will pass it within the prescribed time....

After Madumalai , u can go to Wayanad via Gudlur...... Because the road passes through the tea plantations and will be a mind blowing drive for sure....

U can even visit Meenmutty falls on ur way.... Road are in a very good condition... no doubts about that..

u'll get the thrill of riding in " God's own country "....

And one more thing.....Probably ,Eddakal caves will be closed on Mondays....So plan it properly.

           HAPPY JOURNEY and RIDE SAFE!!!

Thanks Puneeth;

Shall consider this suggestion :) - I'm planning to start from Bangalore @ 6:00 and reach Kamat (BLR-Mysore highway hotel) for breakfast, then start to Mysore - Gundalpet

Hopefully should reach Kalpetta by 2 or 3 PM (before eve)

Hello

We need a suggestion for the following :

1)We are planning to go to Munnar on January 11th 2013. Our trip will be from 11th to 16th. We already booked the ticket from chennai to dindugal for 11th Jan and ticket are waiting list. I would like to know that Munnar is the best trip or Wayanad is the best. We already went to Munnar on 2008. I am going with my husband and I have a 2yrs baby.

2)If wayanad is best then how can i reach wayanad from chennai through train.

3)We are planning to stay there for 4 to 5 days.

Kindly reply at the earliest possible so that we will book the ticket accordingly.

Thanks & Regards,

Hi Aaradhana,
Wayanad is certainly better than Munnar and will recommend you to visit if you already did Munnar in the past. If you want to take the train then i think you can either head by Mysore or via Kozikode whichever is more convenient for you.

From Chennai, Mysore will be the convenient option. I believe there are frequent trains between these cities.

After reaching Mysore you will have to take bus to Sultanbateri in Wayanad. If you are coming from Kozikode then you will be entering from Kalpeta. I don't think there is train connectivity in Wayanad so you will have to travel via busses or taxi.

Here are the links of the blog about Wayanad. Please go through these articles and specially the maps attached. It will help you a lot outlining an itinerary about Wayanad.

Hi Vishnu Kumar,

Thank you for your valuable information.

1) I am bit confused as to where to halt in Wayanad, or rather the best place to halt. If we reach Kozhikode by train, then we will have to take a bus to Wayanad or Sultanbateri or Kalpetta?
Had been to Madikeri in the 1st week of June and enjoyed it. I think in Coorg the center place is Madikeri. Which is the center place for Wayanad ?

2) Secondly, if we travel to Mysore then from Mysore to Wayanad the travel timing by bus is approx 2.30hrs. Else Kozhikode to Wayanad is 1.30hrs. Since we have a baby we want to reduce the bus travel.

3) Regarding Hotel our budget is 2000 to 3000 per day. If we get a good hotel for a lesser price I will be more than happy. Can you advise any good hotel with good restaurants in or around in the center of the town please. We are worried about the food as my kid is very choosy and we don't want to suffer during the trip. Do you prefer to book the hotels once we arrive in Wayanad or do an advance reservation?

Any other advice or words of caution are welcomed.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi Aaradhana,
Following map which i have attached with one of our blog would clear many doubts about the topography of Wayanad district... Please browse the map below..

http://thinkingparticle.com/files/maps/Important-Wayanad-Map.pdf

Will also recommend you to go through the following article..

http://thinkingparticle.com/articles/brief-guidebook-wayanad

Comparing Coorg with Wayanad is fair but Coorg is relatively smaller than Wayanad and only has one big city in that region.... On the other hand, Wayanad has got 3-4 big towns...

If you are coming from Calicut (Kozhikode), then Kalpeta should be your first stop and from there you can visit many sites near by...

** In Terms of Comfort, Mysore to Sultan Batery (Which is one of the city in Wayanad) is much comfortable than Kozhikode to Kalpeta (which is another city in Wayanad).... Kozhikode lies on the sea shore and Wayanad is steep hike uphill from there.. The road between Calicut to Kalpeta is also not very good... There are many hair pin bends on this road which you would prefer to avoid when traveling with a baby.... Mysore to Sultan Batery is relatively flat terrain....

*** Wayanad is full of home homstay options, resorts. All of these accommodation options lie on the main road so its easy to have a look at those... I don't think there is any need to book hotels in advance in Wayanad.... Vegetarian Food is a problem in Kerala and so it is in Wayanad however there are plenty of good restaurants in Big towns (Sultan batery, Kalpeta,Mananthavady )... You will definitely get something really good in 2000-3000 INR per day... a decent hotel should cost nearly 1000 INR in my opinion...

let me know if you have more queries... We will be glad to help you...

Place visited : Mudhumail, Waynad & Mysore

Month:  Nov/2012

Beautiful places…Just out for some time from city

Day1:

Started around 9:00 AM from Bangalore (by car) and reached “masinagudi” around 3 PM was searching for some convenient stay and finally settled in a resort @ Mudhumail to Ooty road which is exactly at the foot hills of  nilgiris, wonderful place to stay and relax.. Served with good “hot” food (pure veg) at reasonable cost.

We saw many spotted deer around the resort and we were told sometimes wild Elephants barge in that area sensing the cooking/smell – but we were not lucky to visually see elephants in the Resort but we saw the damage what it has done during it’s past visit – do not expect too much in quality of the accommodation and stay – but it’s worth the cost.

Day2:

Next day afternoon after finishing the Brunch we took off to “waynad” via Gudalur – wonderful way to drive… we enjoyed driving and finally reached “Kelpetta” – Huh almost city again :( but what to do!! Reached around 5:00 pm almost we stopped all the tea/coffee estates .. during the drive :) We again searched for accommodation and settled in descent resort – only problem was food – since we are vegetarians and we had tough time..

Day3:

Visited “Meenmutty” and enjoyed - anyone planning to visit this falls please plan to take bath .. I did and water was truly cold enjoyed a lot.. best thing is there was no one else apart from us… We did not visit any other place in Waynad :( since we had our scheduled crunch but we are planning to re-visit again Waynad soon…  we left around 3:00PM from Waynad .. Next station was Mysore and we reached mysore stayed over night

Day4:

Next day visited Ranganathittu – Bird sanctuary & Srirangapattina – Temple

And finally back to Bangalore on the 4th day eve..

If I would rate my trip (personal opinion)

1) Masinagudi – the best - we enjoyed

+ve: – out of city and peaceful place to relax, good for trekking, forest lovers

-ve: - Accommodation, no nearby places to visit , No elephant ride (as on Nov/2012).

2) Waynad

+ve: Morning walks through the mist inside the coffee/tea plantation, many places to see locally – like falls, dam etc.,

-ve: commercialized town, Not best for Veg-food lovers

Thanks to "Puneeth"

Cheers'

Thanks for sharing your experience... it will really be a great help for the travelers to Wayanad... Kerala is a challenge for vegetarians... I remember my time when fruits/snacks were the only options... Wayanad is truly enchanting but its difficult to visit all the sites... During Monsoon, one can not take bathe in Meenumutty waterfall because of heavy water flow....  Trail to waterfall is quite scenic indeed....

Seems like you have visited a narrow section of Wayanad and it certainly deserves your second trip...
Try Mysore-Hunsur-Nagarhole-Kutta-Tholpetty-Kattikulam-Mananthavady route someday... It's delightful.. Specially Tholpetty wild life sanctuary is worth a stop.....

I never visited Masingundi though i wanted to....heard/read a lot about elephants of  Madhumalai National Park....

Srirangapatna is one of my favorite town... The bank of Cauvery river is so serene....

Your reviews will be a great help.... looking forward to see you more often...

Cheers
Vishnu Kumar

Hi,

We plan to visit Wayanad between 29th to 31st March, 2013 and stay at a homestay in Kalpetta. The plan is to drive from Bangalore on 29th early morning through the Mysore-Hunsur-Nagarhole-Kutta-Tholpetty-Kattikulam-Mananthavady route. I would like to visit Thirunelli temple and hence this route. We plan to return to Bangalore using the Sulthan Bathery-Muthanga-Gundlupet-Nanjangudu-Mysore route. Please suggest the places which we can visit along these routes and on the one full day we will be staying in Kalpetta. We would ideally like to go for a jeep safari in the wildlife sanctuary as well if possible.

Thanks

Hi,
Route through Nagarhole National Park is truly scenic but Road conditions were not good when I visited there... This route is also not open 24*7.... Read the article about Wayanad which I posted...

If you are taking this route to enter Wayanad then you must visit Tholpetty National Park....

While coming from Tholpetty to Mananthavady, you will get a detour to right for Thirunelli temple.....

Please go through following 2 articles... It will help you chalking out the list of places to be visited while in Kalpeta and while traveling....

Thanks so much for the response... Just one more question... Can we realistically do Tholpetty National Park and Thirunelli temple + surroundings and reach Kalpetta by evening?

What time you are planning to leave from Bangalore ?... This route remain closed during night so it will be difficult to make it to Tholpetty for morning Safari.... Morning Safari in Tholpetty is the best thing.... Tirunelly Temple and its surroundings can take time if you are planning to trek around.... If you have time then you can try to make to Pakshi Pathalam.....

Even with your own covering all these places from Bangalore and reaching Kalpetta on the same evening will be tiring....

Hi, we are planning to drive from Bangalore to wayanad through Mysore, gundlupet..how is the route? Are there any ghat roads to reach wayanad in this route because we are driving for the past 2 months only in city traffic and highways. Have not drived in hilly or ghat roads. Pls suggest whether driving would be safe.

Mysore-Nanjangudu-Gundlupet (NH-212, Ooty road)-Muthanga- Sulthan Bathery gets closed from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM every night... It's not Ghat road but it does pass through the absolute wilderness of Bandipur Forest Reserve.... Road is in good condition and surroundings are scenic.... Ghats will come if you will go towards Calicut....

This is an amazing blog, lot of information which a travller require. Keep up the good work.

Now I need your valuable inputs on the vacation we have planned to Wayanad. We are planning to drive down to Wayanad on 15th August and stay there for 3 days. Travelling with a
3yr old kid. Please suggest if it would be safe to drive down this route as it's raining heavily in Kerala.

How is the road condition ? How much is the Ghat section, is it going to be dangerous driving in ghats considering roads would be all soaked in water.

Please advise....

Hi Chavi,

As mentioned in the Guide book ( http://thinkingparticle.com/articles/brief-guidebook-wayanad )  There are 3 different routes to Wayanad from Bangalore... Considering the heavy down pour in Kerala I will recommend you to take Route1 (Mysore-Nanjangudu-Gundlupet (NH-212, Ooty road)-Muthanga- Sulthan Bathery)....  There is no hilly terrain or winding roads on this route... Quite green and relatively safer.. Road condition is also better on this stretch in comparison to other routes...

Ghat section come when you descend to Calicut (Kozhikode) which you may not be doing while traveling to/from Bangalore...

let me know if you have more queries...

Dear Vishnu,

I have a chance to visit Wayanad this weekend and stay at Vythiri resort( at Kalpetta,I think). I will reach Wayanad by Saturday noon and leave on Sunday night. Would this be worth the trip? i'm coming from Cochin.

Have you been to Vythiri resort?

Lastly, are there bike rentals in Wayanad that I can use in case i wanna explore the countryside (rather than do it in a taxi or auto)

It would be a sin if I didn't acknowledge the great work you are doing with this site. best!

Hi Hem,
Vythiri will be the first city of Wayanad when you come from Cochin side. I believe you will entering via Kozikode. I have not stayed in Vythiri resort but I have been to Vythiri. Kalpetta is close by. 2 days are not enough to do everything of Wayanad.

I will suggest you to have a look at following article and then shortlist the attractions you want to visit. I have not found any Bike on Rent shop when i was in Wayanad (I stayed in Kalpeta, Sultan Bathery and Mananthavady). You can hunt for the same in Kalpetta.

http://www.thinkingparticle.com/articles/brief-guidebook-wayanad

Time is too less considering the wide-range of tourist attractions in Wayanad. let me know if you have more queries...

Thanks for the line of appreciation..it matters...

Hi Vishnu,

First I would like to thank you for maintaining such a useful blog post for anyone going to visit Wayanad. What I would say without any doubt that I came to know more about Wayand from your site then all sites put together. I am planning to visit Wayanad from 3nd Jan to 4th Jan along with wife and parents.

Considering the time constrain can you suggest the bare minimum attraction of Wyanad which I should visit. I think I should atleast cover Banasura Sagar dam and Soojipara Waterfalls.

Any other suggestions would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks,

2 days are less for visiting everything in wayanad... As you are interested to visit Banasura Sagar dam and Soojipara then i would suggest you enter from Sulthan Bathery side and stay in Kalpeta.... There is no point going towards Mananthavady side.

See the table in the bottom of the blog below and visit attractions those are closer to Kalpetta

Hi Sandeep... 4 days are good to have a comprehensive trip to Wayanad... you can try Mananthavady and nearby destinations in the last leg of your trip....

Coming on accommodation options, Wayanad is full homestays... After every 20 km, you will find a resort, homestay, lodge or typical hotel... I don't think there is any need to book hotels in advance... Sulthan Bathery, Kalpetta and Mananthavady has got all sort of accommodation options..

I don't have any hotel number or recommendation but i believe these can be managed independently after arriving in Wayanad..

let's wait for other travelers to reply on it.. may be someone has recommendation on hotels in Wayanad...

Hi Goku.... If you guys can bike till Kalpetta or Sulthan Bathery then there is no need hiring a car for exploring remaining Wayanad...Infact Wayanad is best to be explored on bikes...Wayanad is not a hilly terrain as you might have expected... some parts are bit steep but roads are not precarious... Drive through Bandipur is perfectly safe in my opinion...

Coming on getting car on rents, I think you can easily get one at Kalpetta, Manthavady or Sulthan Bathery... There are handful of car rental services in these tows... I will however recommend you guys to roam on bikes if you are driving till Kalpetta from Calicut...

Hi Vishnu, First of all thanks for the wonderful blog here.

I am planning for a visit to Wayanad next week for 4 days. I have already booked the accomodation for my trip. My concern is about food as i am a vegetarian and the previous comments in this blog make me a little nervous. I wanted to know if there are any decent vegetarian hotels around Sulthan bathery.

Also, i have 2 small kids and will not be doing any trkking activity or so. Can you recommend other places of interest that can be visited during this part of the year.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Ash... getting a vegetarian food should not be a problem in Sulthan bathery... Sulthan bathery is full of modern sort of restaurants serving all sort of meals however getting vegetarian food in road-side dabbas is a hitch..you may not as many veg options...

Wayanad is full of sightseeing destinations... 4 days are good enough for a comprehensive tour to Wayanad...  following blog might be helpful chalking out an itinerary for  your tour..

For vegetarians there are not many options in Kalpetta unless you plan to stay in some good resorts and request them

It was even more difficult if you opt for “jain-food” (no onion and Garlic) like us J so just do have some backup plan.

We are planning for a visit to Wayand this weekend for 3 days. I am highly confused the way out interms of how to reach and where to stay. We will reach banglore airport and from there how do we reach wayanad ( is hiring car a decent one ? If so how much would be the cost ) and also we wish to book the stay before hand within a budget of 2500 . I request you to kindly suggest me to have a decent memorable trip.

Hi,

We have already posted two highly comprehensive article around Wayanad. These articles were written keeping Bangalore as the most important base. I would suggest you to read these posts first..

http://thinkingparticle.com/articles/wayanads-destinations-guide

http://thinkingparticle.com/articles/brief-guidebook-wayanad

From Bangalore airport, i would recommend you to directly go to Mysore and then hire a taxi for your wayanad tour. Car rentals are standard in Bangalore and i think they charge per kilometer basis and driving allowance as extra.

I don't think there is any need to do hotel booking in advance as Wayanad is full of all sort of accommodation options. There are plenty of high-end resorts, home stays and much more..

for 2-3 days, i would recommend you to stay at Sulthan Bathery for one night and Kalpetta for one night... you can visit Banasura Sagar dam, Edakkal Caves, Jain temples, Muthanga wild-life sanctuary, Meenmutty waterfalls and other destinations nearby..

Hope it is helpful..

best route to reach Kalpetta from Bangalore would be

Bangalore - Mysore-Nanjangudu-Gundlupet (NH-212, Ooty road)-Muthanga- Sulthan Bathery and then onto Kalpetta.

Hi Vishnu, I am from chennai - family of 3 -  and planning to visit Wayanad during Dec end 2014. it seems this site is a one stop site for Wayanad. In the above posts, I got answers to a lot of my queries - some of them being - Which route is better - Kozhikode or Mysore and the answer is Mysore. Luckily the demad for train from and to Mysore is less than Kozhikode from Chennai. Second doubt was on veg food - one of my friends suggested that there is a Woodlands hotel - or maybe some fruits and snacks. The third is the number of days - I thought 2 was enough - now i have planned for 3 and finally about booking acc - which I think may not be necessary.

Now I am left with only one question - how do we go for sightseeing on the 3 days (i will take a KSRTC bus from Mysore to SB).is it by hiring a taxi on our own / any share taxis jeeps available from morning to evening AND any particular schedule like one day kalpetta side, one day Mananthavady side etc.

Kindly provide guidance. Thanks

Hi Upendran,

Glad to hear that you found this website useful.

Well, Most of the towns in Wayanad are connected with public buses but these are slow and frequency is thin.

Few parts is will be bit difficult to travel by Public transport. 3 days are good but not good enough for a comprehensive tour to Wayanad.

I would suggest to keep Sultan battery as base and then travel Kalpetta side one day. One day near Sultan Battery and if have time then move towards Mananthavady.

Private Taxi will be much faster of course.

Hi,

Great blog!

We, a family of 4 and a 5months old baby are planning for a trip to masinagudi, kannur and wayanad during christmas time... I am  a bit worried about the climatic condition as well as the resorts there. Would you be able to suggest a resort were we can take our baby without much worries. Our budget is 3k to 4 k

Thanks

Princy
