Hello,

Our tentative plan for landing in Delhi Airport is 11:30 PM date 19th august.

I searched for busses to manali but i could not found any bus that start at that time from Delhi.

we are returning back on 28th august 6:30 PM from Delhi.

I would like to go leh by manali and returning back from Srinagar.

Here is some of my queries :

0. we are four guys ,3 north indian(well accustomed to north winter ,1 mumbaiker(New fish)....:)

1. How to reach manali without wasting our time in Delhi(travelling as well) when there is no direct bus to manali in midnight.

Is there some another alternative ?

2.Our main focus is on Leh but still we would like to cover some places(if they are on the way and feasible),Please suggests us if
there is any.

3. As you know our rough plan, you can determine how much time we are going to take to reach Leh.Suggests us to utilize our time properly by covering as many destination as we can.

4.I know we dont have enough time but still point out some must see
places that we must cover during our trip.

5. if you have some good contact that can make our life easy(i mean in
getting permits and all) then please provide me those.

6.Some medicines that we should have with us .

7.Some other precautions.

8.Please frame out our whole itinerary that we should follow.

9.please suggests us different transportation means that we should take during this all for different routes.

10, I will surely call you if i will have any other question Hoping you will not mind :)

Dear Sunny,

My first advice to you folks is that don't take this terrain lightly; the cold in this part is extreme, especially in the night. Carry good jacket and woolen clothes. One more thing, avoids carrying maximum luggage.

As I always traveled there on bike,so does not have enough information about other transportation. The alternate is you can pick any bus to Delhi – Chandigarh (which is available in the midnight also but still check with transport department of Delhi, Punjab or Haryana) and then from Chandigarh to Manali (by doing so you can save your time coz Delhi – Chandigarh bus will drop you in chandigarh early morning and the same time you can pick another bus from chandigarh to manali)

I don't know what you people heard about Leh but trust me there is nothing in Leh which you can say is excited. Leh is a City (within area of 4 kms) surrounded by Himalayan ranges. Only Gompa and Monasteries are the places of interest. But if you really a adventurous and want to see some extremely beautiful part of the India then must visit to Pangong Lake (world's longest river 145 kms. 30% part in India and rest in China), Tso Moriri Lake (6 kms. lake situated beside the world's remotest place) and Nubra Valley (a desert area)

As you have only 8 days in hand it's really hard to prepare itinerary, however i already sent you an itinerary which may suit you guys.

Will you please provide more details on the same.. we may be able to help you then.... you need to tell us mode of transportation and other details.... i think the main stop of your journey would be Leh and Srinagar so you have to plan your itinerary around these places... Leh and its surroundings will take at least 6-7 days and Near Srinagar also there are places for 3-4 days... you will also spend 1-2 days in Ladakh in getting acclimatize.... then 2 days trip to Nubra... one day at Pangong.. 1-2 days at Tso moriri... one day at Zanskar....

Near Srinagar, it would be Gulmarg, Pehalgaon and srinagar itself...

We do not organize tours so can not help you with the package but we can certainly help you with the most accurate information possible.....

I do not think there would be any need of doing advance booking of hotel rooms.

Vishnu Kumar

Dear

Please give me some information ,that what`s the approx hotel(medium) rent/day at jun-july. How can i get permits for Pangon, Somoriri, Nubra. If i hire taxi then its possible that taxi driver will collect permission for us(like other places i.e.Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim). Is there any permission need to enter in ladakh.

Waiting for your reply as early as possible.

Hi Anjan,
Sorry for the late response as I was traveling to Rajasthan these days. The approximate hotel rent in the month of June-July should go 500 INR per night. It largely depend upon which kind of accommodation option you choose. There would be some budget options as well starting from 250 INR and luxurious options till 3000 INR..in 500 INR, you can get a decent room in my opinion. Like Arunachal and Sikkim, your taxi guy will arrange the permit for you guys.. Once you reach Leh, first decide which taxi guy/tour agent you would like to go for... the same guy will take your documents and arrange your permits.. Even sometimes you can ask them to arrange permits when you are in Manali itself.... You will need special permit for visiting Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley and other border areas.... for Indians, Permits can be easily procured.. let me know if you need more information.. I will be glad to help you...

Vishnu Kumar

Hello Sir... I will recommend you to stay for more than 6 days in Leh if you want to visit all the important sites.... For the first 1-2 days, you won't be able to travel much as your body will need some time to get acclimatize... You are traveling by air so chances of getting hit by acute mountain sickness are more..... I will recommend you to take rest on 8th and 9th of June after arriving to Leh.... During these 2 days, you can try to get inner line permits for Nubra Valley, Pangong lake, Tso moriri Lake.... Contact any tour agent in the main street... they will arrange permits and vehicle for you....Tempo travelers, Mini busses are not that popular in Ladakh however you can get few... I posted an article long time back about the taxi fare in Ladakh... now these figures would have slightly increased...

http://thinkingparticle.com/articles/leh-taxi-fare-ladakh-taxi-fare-rate-list-year-2010-2011

Typical trip to Leh include a 2 day trip to Nubra Valley (over night stay in Dikshit or somewhere) and a one day trip to Pangong... If you have time you can also have a one day trip to Tso-Moriri.... In all of these trips, you will need to start very early in the morning....Local sight seeing at Leh city will take half a day....

About Public transport on Leh-Srinagar Highway, YES there are few busses those directly goes till Kargil and then you need to take another bus to Srinagar... There may be more busses now but these all are private operators... I will recommend you get a private vehicle (Minu Bus/Taxi) on this route rather than choosing painfully slow busses.... With Public transport, I am sure you need to stay over night somewhere at Kargil or Drass.....Even with private vehicle it will take around 16 hours continuous drive...

Hi Roktim... I think you can plan your trip own your own....all you need to book all the tickets in advance by yourself... Here is my take on your itinerary...

Day2: There is no change.. There are many trains... Rajdhani is one of the best and take minimum time on this route.. you can book the same...

I will recommend you to do some research before booking tour with makemytrip... What is the railway fare between Kolkala to Delhi... Airfare between Leh and Delhi for those dates... Sum these values..... After that you just keep 600 INR per night stay for Leh and Nubra....

Taxi fare around Leh is mentioned in the list below... It was for 2010-11...will be slightly more than that..

http://thinkingparticle.com/articles/leh-taxi-fare-ladakh-taxi-fare-rate-list-year-2010-2011

For such a long stay in Leh... you can include river rafting in Zanksar river and Tso moriri lake in your tour as well..... Getting all the tour book from Leh is fairly easy... After arriving at Leh, you need to contact any tour agent... they will arrange permits and vehicle for you.... If you are traveling in a group more of 4-5, cost will cut down a lot because taxi fare around ladakh will be shared among every one....

Why 3 days in Kolkata and one day stay in Delhi.. Are you traveling these places as well....  Sightseeing around Leh will take half a day and same goes with Monastry tours... Duration is not a problem for your tour, i will recommend you to include more sights around Ladakh....

I am very much sure that the cost per person will be fairly less than 29K if you will plan your trip own your own...

btw What is the group size ?

Vishnu Kumar

Dear Vishnu,

Thank you for your comment. As per your suggestion I have checked the air fair on those days in makemytrip.com, expedia.in, goair.com & jetair.com. But for all of them the return price is Rs. 24000 -25000 per person from Delhi-Leh-Delhi. So, in that case I don't think I would be able to complete my journey for 29,000 per person. What do u think.

As you suggested to include more places in out tour, would u please suggest some goo places. Please note, me & my wife are more into Natural beauty than religious or cultural places.

If I take the package of Make My Trip I will be able to see all the places that I wish to see other than TSOMORIRI LAKE. On the last day of the package there is a free day. Is it possible visit Tsomoriri lake on that if I start early in the morning & wan to come back same day evening. From your list I found the taxi price is Rs. 8,000 (Approximately) return to visit Tsomoriri lake, but please let me know how many people can each taxi accommodate.

Looking forward to hear from you soon.

Take Care,

Roktim.

Dear Roktim,
It's not really a very good sign for independent traveling. Makemytrip and all these tour operators are keeping these tickets with them and causing this fair hike... It was never the case earlier.... In this case, we can not do much about cutting down your travel expenses.... but I am really sad to see the way commercialization is affecting travelers...

Ladakh is more about natural places and scenic landscape.... There are few monasteries those you can visit...

Tso-Moriri lake can be done as a one day tour from Leh... you need to start very early in the morning and will be back late in the evening.... Share Sumo can occupy 5-6 people very easily...

let me know if you need more information from my end...

Vishnu Kumar

Hi,

We are 4 (2+2, children 10yr boy & 4yr girl accustomed to travelling)travelling to Srinagar and Leh. Tickets have already been purchased, arival in srinagar on 29 afternoon and departure from Amritsar on 06th early morning. We will be hiring full time toyota innova. Initially we had plan to travel back from Leh to Amritsar via Srinagar but later on changed the route to enjoy the sceneries of Leh-Manali highway. We have the following itinerary, kindly suggest if our itinerary is ok, keeping in mind health and weather........ thank you in advance....

29TH AUGUST - CHECK-IN - ARIVAL IN SRINAGAR 01:30PM - VISIT TO (GULMARG AND) DAL LAKE
30TH AUGUST - VISIT TO PAHALGAM & GULMARG
31ST AUGUST - CHECK-OUT AND VISIT TO SONAMARG AND KARGIL BEFORE CHECK-IN IN LEH AT NIGHT.
01ST SEPTEMBER - VISIT TO PONGONG TSO AND TSO MORIRI
02ND SEPTEMBER - VISIT TO NUBRA VALLEY AND LEH SIGHT SEEING
03RD SEPTEMBER - CHECK-OUT AND OFF TO MANALI, CHECK-IN IN MANALI
04TH SEPTEMBER - CHECK-OUT AND OFF TO DALHOUSIE, CHECK-IN IN DALHOUSIE
05TH SEPTEMBER - SIGHT SEEING IN DALHOUSIE AND CHECK-OUT, OFF TO AMRITSAR (VISIT JULIANWALA BAGH AND GOLDEN TEMPLE BEFORE GOING TO AIRPORT AT 10:00PM)

Hi Ateeq... Here are my inputs on the itinerary you have outlined... There are many big gaps in your itinerary....

31st August: Even if you are leaving very early in the morning from Srinagar and continuously driving, you can not make to Leh in the evening. It is at least 14 hours drive... Try to cross Kargil and drass duriing day time itself.... In night, Army shuts down the route near drass and keep the traffic one way... In that case, you may have to wait there for 3-4 hours...

1st September: After reaching Leh, you need at least one day to acclimatize and arranging your permits for border areas (Pangong lake, Nubra valley and Tso moriri Lake).... I do not think there is any possibility of traveling to pangong lake on 1st Septemeber...

Pangong lake and Tso moriri lake are on two different routes and can not be covered in single... Both of these lakes are at least 1 day tour from Leh provided you are leaving very early in the morning... Detailed article on Pangong lake and Tso moriri lake is mentioned below.

http://thinkingparticle.com/articles/enchanting-pangong-lake-leh-ladakh

http://thinkingparticle.com/articles/tso-moriri-lake-mountain-lake-ladakh

Nubra valley is again 2 day tour from Leh... you need to stay over night somewhere at Dikshit..... you can not do it the way you mentioned... Leh city sightseeing won't take more than half day.....

http://thinkingparticle.com/articles/nubra-valley-cold-desert-himalayas

You can also not drive from Leh to Manali in one day... overnight stay at Zispa or Sarchu is must...so again it would be 2 days rather than one day as you mentioned...

Again you are trying to go to Dalhousi from Manali which is a very long drive....

Ateeq: I will recommend you not to include so many destinations in single trip... If you want to go to Dalhousi then you should detour from Keylong rather than coming to Manali..... You have assumed the duration of travel as if you will be traveling on well constructed highways... Srinagar-Leh-Manali road is one of the most challenging one in the country.... Your trip is truly inspiring but i will recommend you to add more days in the trip...

Please let me know if you need more information... I'll be glad to help you...

Vishnu Kumar

Thank you so much Vishnu,

I took google maps help to get route plan, distance and time span. Suggest me the itinerary if I postpone my onward flight from Amritsar to 08th early morning. You can eliminate Manali if it is advisable to see that we are not tired of travelling too much. Im sorry to trouble you for such silly things but you are well aware of the ground reallity of that place.....
Maxinum number of days we have spent on any trip is 8 days so far, thats why I opted for 8 days.

Thank you very much once again Vishnu for your input.....

Dear Ateeq...
Google maps is a great help planning trips but this terrain is entirely different.. Here is an itinerary you can follow

29TH AUGUST - CHECK-IN - ARIVAL IN SRINAGAR 01:30PM - VISIT TO (GULMARG AND) DAL LAKE
30TH AUGUST - VISIT TO PAHALGAM & GULMARG
31ST AUGUST - CHECK-OUT AND VISIT TO SONAMARG and the head further to Kargil, Drass... Keep driving to Leh... you will probably making it early in the morning on 1st September.
01ST SEPTEMBER - Take rest... Try to get yourself acclimatize to climate conditions.. Apply for your permits to Nubra Valley, Tso moriri lake, Pangong lake.
02ND SEPTEMBER - Start early in the morning for Pangong lake and return back in the evening.
03RD SEPTEMBER - Start early in the morning for Nubra Valley... Stay somewhere at Dikshit or any other town... travel around sand dunes etc.
04TH SEPTEMBER - Come back to Leh... and travel around leh City...
05TH SEPTEMBER - Start early in the morning for Tso moriri lake.. visit the lake and head further towards Sarchu and Zispa.. I believe by evening you can make till Sarchu or Zispa... Stay there overnight...
06th September- Start again for Keylong or some other town on Manali-Leh highway from where you can take a road town to Kangra valley... I think whole day travel can take you down till Dalhousi...
07th September- Visit Dalhousi and other sites and head further to Amritsar via Pathankot...
08th September- Visit Jaliabala Bagh...Golden Temple..Bagha Border... take your flight at 10:00 PM...

It is however hectic yet still doable...

Regards
Vishnu Kumar

On the lighter note... Google maps made the life of a explorer so mundane and unexiciting...

Hi Vishnu

We are reaching Leh on 13th May and staying at Choglamsar. Our resort doesn't provide room heaters. So my first question is do we require room heating these days and secondly, where can I hire room heaters in Leh?

Cheers

Hi Soli,
You won't need room heater during summers.. All you need woolen cloths, blankets and quilt.. that would be sufficient.. During day time, its really warm in Ladakh...

There is nothing like hiring room heaters.. During Summers, they don't provide room heaters in hotels.... neither would you need it...

Hi Soli... I do not remember any specific shop which rents bike but there are many of those.... They generally rent out enfield...

I do not think there is any paragliding site around Leh....

Getting bike on rent is fairly easy at Leh... you won't have any problem...

Hi Vishnu,
My family and I, I.e my husband, my 20 year old daughter and 13 year old son are going back to Ladakh after a lovely 10 day trip in May 2010. On that trip we were able to do Alchi, Lamayuru, Khardungla Top and Changla top but could not cross over to either Nubra or Pangong due to snow. We are planning to reach leh on the 13th of August, acclimatizing on the 13 th and 14 th and then tackling Nubra and Pangong. I would like to know is whether I can fit in Tso Moriri. Is it worth it and is it substantially different from Pangong. We are scheduled to leave leh on the 20 th.
Thank you.

Hi Bhagya... I truly admire your love towards Ladakh which making you revisit such a splendid landscape of the country... Weather is really unpredictable in this part of Himalyas but July and August are considered as the best chances to find all the roads open.... However there are chances of snowfall in the end of August....

Tso-Moriri and Pangong are difficult to compare... Due to an incomprehensible feeling, Tso-Moriri has a special place in my heart... For many it is not very different from Pangong but i find it really exotic than any other lake of Ladakh region....

The route to Tso-Moriri is one of the best you can take in Ladakh... It does not cross any higher pass but lake itself lies at 15K feet.... I loved the surroundings... Tso-Moriri is also home to few rare species from rodent family... In my opinion, Tso-Moriri is worth a trip....

Good luck...

Many thanks, Vishnu. I shall most certainly pitch for Tso Moriri. :) after reading your reply. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the weather gods will support us. As for revisiting Ladakh, may I please borrow your expression and say that it is an incomprehensible feeling that is drawing us there as we felt very bad to come away in the first place!
May I also congratulate you on your website and the way in which you and your team answer the queries! Our best wishes to you and may you go from strength to strength and become indispensable to us travelers!

Hello Vishnu,
Can I trouble you again. We are due to leave Bangalore on 12th August Sunday and fly into Leh on Monday morning. We can also leave on the night of 10th, fly into Manali on the 11th and drive to Leh from there.. Is this a good idea? Can I have some information about this drive, how long it will take and how are the camping facilities en route. Again, is it worth it?

Hi Bhagya,
Yaa... that seems like an idea but you won't be getting many flights from Delhi to Kullu Airport....anyway, once you arrived at Manali...I will recommend you to have overnight stay in the town before heading further to Leh.. Manali to Leh is some 460 km and it will take 2 days....

* Start early in the morning, Keep driving towards Leh... by evening, you will reach Sarchu or Zispa where tents are available for overnight stay... Staying overnight at Sarchu will be challenging... temperature drops drastically in the night....

* Next morning, again start further north towards Leh from Sarchu/Zispa... You will make Leh at around 3-4 PM in the evening....

Btw... I welcome you for your decision to take the road from Manali to Leh.... It certainly tops the list of "the most scenic roads to drive in subcontinent"...

Hi Akhil,
I have just gone through the itinerary attached in word document...Quite comprehensive work you have done in outlining the same...

I am just wondering why you have not included pangong lake, Tso moriri lake during your trip to Ladakh...

Getting inner line permit on Sunday would be a challenge... While driving from Srinagar to Leh, you can contact any tour agent at Leh to arrange the same for your group... Generally the hotel where you staying at Leh can arrange your permits...

I remember that we got our permits in advance while driving from Manali to Leh... We asked the guy at Manali to contact his partners at Leh to arrange the permits for our group... They will ask some extra charges for that...

Rest everything seems perfect with your itinerary...

Good luck

Thanks Vishnu for such a quick reply. Actually we had planned for Pangong and Tosso mori also but due to some urgent engagement we had to shorten our trip. We had planned for Ladak for over a year and we did't wanted to cancel the whole trip. That's why we have trimmed our tour plan. Hope that next year we will again visit all the parts in Ladakh......Again thanks for your suggestions..

Dear Vishnu please let me know what is the per person cost to visit Tsomoriri lake(Including food, permission and any other extra cost) if I come back same day? Is it too much pressure physically to visit Tsomoriri within 1 day?

Thanks in advance,

Roktim

Hi Roktim,
Tso-Moriri is some 220 Km from Leh but can be covered in a single day trip because you don't have to cross any higher pass on the way... Obviously you will have to start early in the morning and you will be back by 10-11 PM in the evening...

The key expense of the trip would be hiring the taxi... you can browse the link below for the rate of hiring a taxi to Tso-Moriri..

http://thinkingparticle.com/articles/leh-taxi-fare-ladakh-taxi-fare-rate-list-year-2010-2011

should be around 8000 INR.... better to check it at Taxi Union office...

Food and permissions won't be much... Will recommend you to carry fruits, chocolates, dry fruits, water bottles etc... you won't find restaurants on the way....

Permits should not be more than 200 even when you are getting those through a tour agent.

Vishnu Kumar

Dear Mr. Vishnu,

Good Day! Thank you for your previous answers.

It seems like none of the packages that I am getting do not cover all the area I want to visit. Would you please let me know If I go to Nubra Valley by myself what it would cost? What is the arrangement of accommodation, food and transport there if I go there by myself. Which part of Nubra valley is more green or should I visit? Is it possible to visit the place within 1 day?

Which one is more beautiful Nubra Valley or Tsomoriri lake, given I am going to Pangong lake?

Out of Ladakh, can you tell me where the shooting of the movie "Billu" by Shahrukh Khan took place. I really like the village that they have shown in the movie.

Waiting to get your reply soon.

Best Regards,
Roktim.

Hi Roktim,
I will recommend you to go through the article posted on the link below and see what all palces you want to visit in Nubra Valley.

http://thinkingparticle.com/articles/nubra-valley-cold-desert-himalayas

Generally Nubra is covered as 1 night 2 day tour.... I will recommend you to stay at Diskit... Visit all the way till Hundar and then visit Panamik... I think the total rent of taxi for such tour will be around 6000 INR.... Accommodation and food won't be expensive.. You can get a basic room in some 400-500 INR.... For transport, you need to do the arrange from a taxi operator at Leh...

FYI: There are shared jeeps from Leh to Nubra (Not very frequent) if you are willing to take public transport...

Which one is more beautiful Nubra Valley or Tsomoriri lake, given I am going to Pangong lake? : It's a complicated one for me....
If you are visiting Pangong Lake then my pick would be Nubra Valley....

About the filming locations of Billu movie: frankly i never watched that movie but i did some reseach after your question and I found that this movie was filmed in Tamilnandu and film city... it was not filmed in Himalayas...

Vishnu Kumar

Dear Vishnu,

just heard from a tour operator that there has been restriction imposed for the citizens of Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Chaina, Hong Kong, Taiwan in visiting remote area such as Pangong, Tsomoriri, Khardungla in Leh. Do you know anything about it? Since I am about to pay the tour operator please let me know asap.

I will update you as soon as i will hear back from him...

There is a possibility to have stringent rules for issuing inner line permits.

Hi Shupti/Roktim,
I called up some of my friends at Leh and none was sure about the inner line permission policies for Bangladesh tourists... For some tourists, they issue the permit.. for some they do not...

Pakistan nationals are however not allowed to visit Pangong, Tso Moriri and Nubra valley...

Please carry all your identity cards (Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID)...   One of the guy reported that if you submit your pan card/voter id/driving license as id proof then they may issue you the permit but if you show your Bangladeshi passport then they will not issue you the permit... (seems quite irrational to me though)...

                   Mailing you an important number...

Vishnu Kumar

Dear Vishnu,

Please let me know about the issue of visiting Pangong lake. I have also sent you an e mail.

If I can't visit Ladakh can you suggest me some other area where I can visit. I have 10 - 12 days on my hand from July 01. Anyplace, I go I have to start from Kolkata. Please note the airfare is too much for me, train tickets are overbooked in the online.

Keeping all the obstacles in my mind please suggest me some area which is naturally beautiful.

Thanks a lot for your continuous support.

Roktim.

Hi Roktim,
As mentioned in the email, My friend inquired at DC office Leh and tourists from neighboring countries (Pakistan, Bangladesh, China) are not issued inner line permits.

For getting special permit, you need to contact your embassy or home department at Delhi...

Sorry, you will not be allowed to visit Pangong Lake, Tso-Moriri, Nubra Valleys... There is no point to visit Ladakh if you can not get inner line permit...

I know that trains are fully occupied during this summer and airfare is rising every day... I can also see that you are very much interested to visit Himalayas...

I will not recommend you anything from the planes of Northen India...It's really very hot these days...

If you are interested, you can try something in Uttaranchal Pradesh.... browse the thread below...

http://thinkingparticle.com/forum/best-places-visit-uttarakhand

There are many places in Himachal as well.... let me know more on days and date.. I will draft an itinerary for you...

Hi Roktim,
No inner line permit is required for visiting Gulmarg and Pahalgaon.
Inner line permit will be required to visit Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake and Tso moriri. For Bangladeshi tourists, this permit is issued by ministry of home affairs Delhi...

Hi Kumar,

Hope you and your team are doing good……

Had been to Kashmir and Himachal but we had to drop your favourite place at the last moment.  We had a news of landslide on way to pongong which left about 400 tourists stranded so we immediately changed our itinerary and accommodated Dalhousie and Dharamsala in place of Leh by booking ticket from Srinagar to Amritsar.  Later on we understood that the news was exaggerated and the road was cleared the very next day.

Hope to visit Leh in our next outing. The experience of visiting Kashmir and Khajjiar was very good and Will be share it soon on your Kashmir link.

Thank you once again for your efforts and expecting to approach you on Leh visit soon……
